When to come

Spring and autumn are comfortable for long evenings outside. Summer nights are hot and humid but lively; typhoon season can disrupt plans from late summer into autumn. Winter is cold but dry, and Dotonbori's lights read well on long nights.

Getting around on a hosted trip

Arrival from Kansai airport is by private licensed vehicle. From Osaka, Nara and Kyoto are each reachable in under an hour by train, which makes it a good base for a Kansai itinerary. Train fares outside an included activity are yours.

Filming notes

• Ask vendors before filming them or their stall; most say yes when asked, fewer when they are not.
• Eat at or beside the stall rather than walking through crowds with food.
• Bridges over the canal get packed at night. Keep tripods and gimbals out of walkways.
• Drone flights over busy central areas generally need permission and are rarely realistic.
